Laparoscopic

Cryptorchidectomy

 Providing a more safer and efficient remedy for retained testicles

What Is Laparoscopic Cryptorchidectomy?

Laparoscopic Cryptorchidectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat cryptorchidism, a condition where one or both testicles fail to descend into the scrotum. This advanced surgery is performed using small incisions and specialised instruments, offering a safer and more efficient option compared to traditional open surgery.

Indications for Laparoscopic Cryptorchidectomy

;

One or both testicles have not descended into the scrotum by the time they reach six months of age.

;

There is a risk of testicular cancer or other complications associated with cryptorchidism

;

The condition is causing discomfort or potential health risks for the animal.

Cryptorchidectomy Procedure

Laparoscopic cryptorchidectomy procedures involve several key steps, each aimed at safely and efficiently removing retained testicles while minimising tissue trauma and postoperative discomfort for the animal. Here’s an overview of the procedure:

Step 01
Step 01

Pre-Procedure Preparation

Before the surgery, we conduct a thorough examination and pre-anaesthetic blood tests to confirm your pet is healthy enough for the procedure. Your pet will need to fast for 8–12 hours before surgery (water is usually allowed). On the day of the procedure, our team will review the plan with you, ensuring all your questions are answered.

Step 02
Step 02

Anaesthesia

Once your pet is prepared for surgery, they will be placed under general anaesthesia to ensure they are completely unconscious and pain-free throughout the procedure. An intravenous catheter is typically placed to administer fluids and medications, supporting their blood pressure and hydration during the surgery.

Step 03
Step 03

Surgical Incisions

Small incisions, usually around 5-10mm in size, are made near the abdomen. These incisions are strategically placed to allow the introduction of a laparoscope (a small camera) and specialised instruments used during the surgery. The minimal size of the incisions helps to reduce tissue trauma and ensures a faster recovery time.

Step 04
Step 04

Visualisation

The laparoscope, which has a light and camera, is inserted through a small incision. It transmits live images to a monitor, allowing the surgeon to see the retained testicle and the nearby structures clearly. This clear view enhances precision and helps the surgeon navigate safely during the procedure, even if the testicle is in a difficult location like the abdomen or inguinal canal.

Step 05
Step 05

Crytorchidectomy

Once the testicle(s) are visualised, the surgeon uses laparoscopic tools to isolate it. If located in the abdomen or inguinal canal, the surgeon detaches it from adjacent tissues. After extraction, the surgeon checks for abnormalities and addresses any potential complications.
Step 06
Step 06

Closure & Recovery

Once the testicle is removed, the incisions are closed with sutures. Your pet will be monitored as they wake from anaesthesia, and you’ll receive aftercare instructions, including pain management and activity restrictions. Most pets are able to go home the same day and typically recover quickly, with a follow-up appointment scheduled to ensure proper healing.

Laparoscopic Crytorchidectomy Benefits in Pets

Overall, laparoscopic cryptorchidectomy offers numerous benefits for your furry friends, including reduced postoperative pain, faster recovery, and fewer complications, all while improving cosmetic outcomes with smaller incisions.

Minimally Invasive

Small incisions are used, reducing pain, scarring, and recovery time compared to traditional surgery.

Faster Recovery

Pets typically heal more quickly and return to normal activities sooner, often within a few days.

Reduced Complications

The procedure is associated with fewer risks of infection, bleeding, and other complications due to its precision and minimal trauma

Improved Visualisation

The laparoscope provides a clear, detailed view of the internal structures, allowing for more accurate identification and removal of the retained testicle.

Less Pain

Smaller incisions and less tissue manipulation result in less postoperative discomfort for the pet.

Shorter Hospital Stay

Many pets can go home the same day of the procedure due to its minimally invasive nature.
